Franschhoek is a very walkable village. For wine estates further out, hop on the Wine Tram to visit several farms without needing to drive, or call an Uber. The drive from Cape Town winds through scenic mountain passes and vineyards.

Just a five-minute walk from the house, the historic mill at La Cotte Farm is a great place for fresh-baked goods and coffee. For security reasons, La Cotte can’t be reached directly from the property; take the short walk around to the farm’s main gates.

Franschhoek, the “French corner”, was settled by French Huguenot refugees in the late 1600s. Their story is told at the Huguenot Memorial Museum and the striking monument at the top of the village, set in gardens against the mountains.
